Fast Roads
Keene, New Hampshire

frcable.jpgWith the goal of creating an open access, big broadband internet network in the Connecticut River Valley, MEDC created an entity called FastRoads. Using a mix of private and federal funds, MEDC put together the financing infrastructure for FastRoads to build and launch a 250-mile fiber optic network throughout the region. A significant part of the mission was to improve services for residents, businesses, and community anchor institutions (schools, hospitals, town halls, etc.) that were previously grossly under-served/unserved.

Completed in 2014, this network was eventually sold in 2017 to allow the opportunity for the network to continue to expand.

Keene ICE
Keene, New Hampshire

keeneice.jpgKeene ICE (Ice Center Enterprise Inc.) completed work on an $8.2 million rink in 2015 that is host to dozens of club and school teams, lessons and skating programs. The facility, designed by Dan Scully Architects and built by MacMillan, was accomplished by renovating and repurposing a portion of a City-owned facility on Marlborough Stree that also houses the Keene Police and Public Works departments.

In its role as project developer, MEDC worked closely with the City and ICE to structure the deal, assemble financing for the project, and select and oversee the professionals needed to carry out the project. Several financial lending partners provided loans to ICE, including four local banks – Savings Bank of Walpole  lead lender), NBT Bank, Mascoma Savings Bank and Bank of New Hampshire – as well as the Business Finance Authority and C&S Wholesale Grocers. In addition, the City of Keene invested $1.3 million in the project. However, the vast majority of funding for the project was fundraised by Keene ICE from more than 600 individual and business donors.

The rink, which is owned by the City, is run on a daily basis by Keene ICE through an operating agreement with the City.
